Xudong Zhu, PhD .Professor and Director Department of
Microbiology, Nankai University College of Life Sciences, Tianjin
300071, PR China PhD: Cornell University, College of Agriculture and
Life Sciences, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA
Research Interests:
We dedicate our research effort to the development of the molecular
biology and biotechnology of fungi. Currently, we're working on two
mycological topics with much the same genetic, genomic, and
molecular approaches. The first area addresses a basic issue on how
a soil fungus, Cryptococcus neoformans, turns out to be a severe
human pathogen. The yeast exists ubiquitously in the environment and
primarily causes life-threatening infections in favorable patients
with compromised immunity such as HIV afflicted people. Our studies
illustrates the fundamental mechanisms by which the yeast cells
respond to and survive in the host utilizing molecular, cellular and
biochemical techniques. The other area we have been working on
reveals the biosynthesis of a natural antitumor drug, paclitaxel (Taxol),
in a couple of fungi isolated in China. These taxol-producing fungi
have a great potential in industrial application to replace current
production of the drug by extracting from yew trees which has been
devastating the yew forest around the world while the yield is
extremely low. The success of our work in creating high yield fungal
strains by genomic engineering strategy, as well as innovative
techniques for taxol fermentation, will virtually change the
situation of scarcity and expensiveness of this important cancer
drug.
